Therapy is expensive, and hard, and difficult, and time consuming, and whatever other excuse you may have developed along the way.
Yet, we all need some help from time to time. Many of us are lucky enough to have friends or family who can provide that support. Sometimes, they can’t or they won’t. That’s where dirt cheap therapy thrives.
My goals here are simple, write down some of the things I say, teach, or advocate for in therapy. Offer as many of those stories, ideas, practices, and theories to you for as cheaply as possible.
Considering the average price of private pay therapy runs about $150 an hour, this is dirt cheap. And, while it isn’t a substitute for talking to someone about whatever it is you’re experiencing, maybe it can give you a framework for how you want to begin or just give you some encouragement to take the first step.
1. These are my stories…
and they are my attempt to capture some of those moments when I think and speak clearly as a therapist. It’s a place to help put them together in a way that can hopefully be helpful. When I was studying for my licensure exam, I wrote down a lot of the content I needed to synthesize. Others found it helpful. 20 years later, I’ve experienced and learned a lot and it seems like a good time to start again.
2. I’m building a community…
to try and be helpful to those who are in therapy, looking to start therapy, wondering what it is all about, or those therapists who might want additional resources. What you’ll get are the stories of my experience as a therapist, the theories and philosophies that guide me, and some of the cool shit we’re learning about what it means to be human. In the business we’d probably call this psychoeducational, mainly because we like long words.
3. I’m committed to…
publishing free content most Wednesdays. Those who opt for the less dirt-cheap dirt-cheap therapy will get some bonus features like:
Worksheets to practice some of the stuff I’m writing about.
One-pagers that can be shared or printed.
Additional posts that help synthesize the themes I’m working off in a particular month.
Finally, though not nailed in stone, a time for us to meet and talk, ask questions, share ideas.
4. So, subscribe…
and check this out for a while. Come and find out if I can stick to my word. Maybe you’ll learn something, better yet, maybe you’ll teach me something…
Because that’s what this is all about. Your journey. And, I imagine, this beginning point, waypoint, restart — whatever it is you’re calling this time in your life could always use additional support. While many of us might like to walk alone at times, it’s always nice to find others who are on a similar journey, if only to talk for a little while.
Paid subscriptions: 10 bucks a month (100 bucks for the year). Gets you access to the worksheets I’m building, infographics of that month’s themes, and other things I dream about providing as a thank you for subscribing.
Free subscriptions: Access to roughly three posts a month. The content will be there, you’ll have to do some of the work to put it together though.
Here’s the thing, we often don’t take things seriously without some skin in the game. 10 bucks a month is about as cheap as I can go. I want this to be accessible to as many as possible. If there are some extenuating circumstances, reach out and I’ll do what I can. But, and here’s the first nugget, without having some sort of consequence (positive or negative), we most often won’t follow through on the habits we want to create.
